Many credit card issuers offer instant, or nearly instant, decisions on your application if you decide to apply online, versus by mail or telephone.
Some of the instant credit card offers I am aware of:
American Express Cards - When I signed up for my AmEx Clear Card, I did it online, and was told I was approved within about 30 seconds of hitting the submit button. I received the card approximately one week later, along with an attractive brochure and insert with my printed terms and conditions. A wide range of credit cards on the AmEx site offer instant approval.
Chase Freedom - The Chase Freedom card, which offers up to 5% cash back in rotating popular categories, offers online application and an instant offer of credit in some cases -- in my case, I was not instantly approved. They requested additional information about me via regular mail about one week later, which I found inconvenient and greatly disliked. Your experience may be better though!
Discover Card - Instant card application and offer decision is available for the Discover Cashback Bonus card, Discover Open Road, Miles by Discover and other popular cards. Click the orange "apply now" button on their site to load the form. Their web site states that filling the form out takes only minutes and you will get an offer response "within 60 seconds." Very close to instant. I plan to get the Miles by Discover card in April or May 2010... I can't apply for any more cards right now because I just applied for one, and also just took out a $9,500 balance transfer (see my previous post earlier today about that).
