If you still have a bad credit card in your wallet, pay off the ENTIRE BALANCE as soon as humanly possible. Stop using it. In fact, chop the damn thing up into tiny little pieces and throw it in the trash.
If you are paranoid, throw it into two separate trash bins or bags so that a possible ID thief cannot put the card back together.
What is a bad credit card? It's an account that no longer fits your needs, either because its reward program sucks, the cash back percentage isn't high enough, you no longer need the air miles, or simply because the interest rate is too high.
You should never pay interest on a credit card. You should (almost) never pay an annual fee.
If you use credit, you need to have a lot of discipline and pay the whole balance in full each month. Otherwise, whatever rewards or cash back you receive will be "wiped out" by what you're paying in interest charges & fees over time.
Show no mercy on your bad credit cards. They don't belong in your wallet.
Remember: you don't need to actually CLOSE the account after you chop up your credit card. Doing so could adversely affect your credit score in the short-term. Instead, keep the card account open with a $0 balance.
I would only suggest closing the account if there is an annual fee you do not want to pay any longer. Before closing, try to get the annual fee waived. Many card companies will accommodate this request as a courtesy at least once. Some will not, though.
